Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.

Sometimes you stumble upon situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer extent of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a groan.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck suddenly, consuming entire villages in its path. Buildings collapsed like fragile toys, and the chaos that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath wreckage, their fate precarious. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to face a future forever scarred.

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was scrambling out the door, I fell and gracefully all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I sweating. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was just as bad. Everything. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's more info the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
